Debido a su alto contenido en antioxidantes, ha sido estudiada en diferentes países como potencial agente anticancerígeno. En este trabajo se evaluó la citotoxicidad de extractos de pulpa y cáscara de guayaba en dos líneas celulares cancerígenas de pulmón (H460), y adenocarcinoma colorectal humano (SW480), ATCC. Las células fueron tratadas a concentraciones crecientes desde 250 hasta 450 &#956;g/mL con ambos tipos de extracto, durante 24, 48 y 72 horas. Las células utilizadas para las inmunotinciones fueron expuestas durante 48 horas con la concentración establecida como IC50 del extracto de pulpa. Se determinó que el extracto de pulpa produjo la mayor citotoxicidad en las células de cáncer de pulmón y de colón obteniéndose una IC50 de 352,5 y 376 &#956;g/mL respectivamentee. Además, parece observarse una fragmentación del núcleo en las células expuestas a los extractos. Los análisis estadísticos demostraron que no se tiene un comportamiento dosis dependiente y que el factor tiempo de exposición al extracto es un factor crítico en la citotoxicidad.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract [29] Taiwanese guava was introduced in Costa Rica in 1978 and then has been extensively studied for its medicinal and nutritional properties. Due to its high content of antioxidants, it has been studied in different countries as a potential anticancer agent. In this work we evaluated the cytotoxicity of extracts of pulp and guava peel in two carcinogenic cell lines: lung (H460), and human colorectal adenocarcinoma (SW480), ATCC. Cells were treated at increasing concentrations of 250 to 450 &#956;g / mL with both types of extract for 24, 48 and 72 hours. Cells used for immunostaining were exposed for 48 hours at the IC50 concentration of the pulp extract. It was determined that the pulp extract produced the highest cytotoxicity in lung and colon cancer cells, obtaining an IC50 of 352.5 and 376 &#956;g / mL respectively. In addition, fragmentation of the nucleus appears in the cells exposed to the extracts. Statistical analysis showed that no dose-dependent behavior was observed and that the time factor of exposure to the extract was a critical factor in cytotoxicity.]]></p></abstract>
