Sin embargo, este sector también es un gran consumidor de recursos naturales y produce una cantidad significativa de residuos. Los datos sobre la generación de residuos del sector de la construcción en Costa Rica son escasos. Por lo tanto, se realizó un estudio con la finalidad de desarrollar una línea de base sobre las cantidades y composición de estos materiales, y determinar los motivadores y las barreras para lograr una actividad más sostenible. Se llevó a cabo una encuesta mediante cuestionarios, entrevistas y visitas de campo. De acuerdo con los resultados, los residuos se componen básicamente de madera, suelo, restos de tuberías, láminas de techo corrugado, alambres, materiales de embalaje (papel, plástico, cartón), cemento, hormigón, bloques, pinturas y escombros. Las cantidades (ya sea en volumen o peso) se desconocen, ya que la mayoría de las empresas no mantiene un registro de tales datos. Con base en los resultados obtenidos, se estableció un indicador de generación de residuos con un valor de 100 kg/m2. Esta cifra es alta si se compara con los valores reportados por la literatura para los países desarrollados. Este alto valor podría explicarse por la falta de información sobre el impacto ambiental de la actividad de la construcción, el desconocimiento de tecnologías, la falta de fiscalización gubernamental y la ausencia de incentivos de mercado, entre otros factores que reducirían el impacto medioambiental del sector.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The construction industry is considered a pillar in the economy of nations. It provides housing, buildings and infrastructure for a growing population and continued urbanization, especially in developing countries. However, this sector is known as a major consumer of natural resources producing a significant amount of construction and demolition waste. The data, on the situation of construction waste generation is scarce in Costa Rica. Therefore, the aim of the study is to develop a baseline on the quantities and composition of the waste generated during the construction process, as well as the motivators and barriers to achieve a more sustainable activity. In order to achieve the objective, a survey was done by means of a questionnaire and interviews including construction site visits. According to the results, construction waste is composed of wood, soil, rest of piping materials, corrugated sheet, metal wires, packaging materials (paper, plastic, cardboard), cement, concrete, cement blocks, paints and debris. The quantities, either by volume or weight are unknown due to the lack of records kept by the companies. An indicator related to construction waste generation was determined as 100 kg/m2. This value is high compared to the ones reported in literature for developed countries which could be explained as due to the lack of knowledge on technologies and information on the environmental impact of their activities by the construction companies, the absence of enforcement procedures, and market incentives for a more sustainable activity.]]></p></abstract>
