El Año Internacional de la Biodiversidad y la Biología Tropical
The International Year of Biodiversity and Tropical Biology

The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. For almost 60 years the Revista has been contributing to understanding, using and preserving the enormous diversity of tropical life. In contrast with so many publications that reflect the human bias by paying little attention to marine biodiversity, the Revista has always shown a healthy balance of articles on marine, freshwater and terrestrial biodiversity.

We dedicate this, the December 2010 issue, to the International Year of Biodiversity, and we start with a human touch, a homage to two outstanding tropical scientists, Diomedes Quintero, winner of the Tropical Biology Award 2010, and Luis Diego Gómez, a naturalist in the classical sense and Book Review Editor of the Revista for many years, who passed away a year ago.

We follow with sections on newly discovered species, including the largest placented worm ever found; a preview of recent evolutionary models exemplified by snails; conservation of specially endangered groups such as corals and the last remaining species of a whole turtle family; how biodiversity changes over hundreds of years; ecological adaptations to freshwater and land; and finally, some uses of tropical biodiversity.

The thousands of contributions that we have published since 1953 have been produced at a huge financial cost, and to celebrate this special year, we are proud to announce that, over the next months, we will be making the whole 58-year production of the Revista available to everyone, free of charge, in the Internet. Not for a month, not for a year, but for ever.
