Message of the founder of Revista de Biología Tropical,
Dr. Ettore De Girolami

Dr. Gabriel Macaya, Rector of the University
Mrs. Yamileth González, Vice-Rector of Investigation
Members of the Editorial Board, Revista de Biología Tropical
University and Invited Professors,
Ladies and Gentlemen

I am really sorry for not being able to be here with you on this day of the solemn celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Revista de Biología Tropical.

Who would have thought that half a century after its appearance, the Revista was going to be considered a publication of great importance, as is indicated by the fact that it appears cited in themost important journals dedicated to this task?

Those of us who with a lot of effort and optimism started 50 years ago that task, have to thank today those that persisted in this enterprise with solid scientific criteria and a lot of affection.

Fifty years have passed for Revista de Biología Tropical and also fifty years have passed for Ettore De Girolami, with the difference that while I have one heart only, and with it I can live for a limited time, the Revista has had and will have many hearts, those of the ones that have dedicated themselves to improving it during all these years, which is the reason that its life will be assured for many years.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is my message of good omens!

In my absence, I have requested my son Umberto to represent me in this solemn occasion, because like myself, he always remembers with affection the years of his youth in Costa Rica. Also, and as a father, I say it with inmodesty, I feel very proud to be represented by a person with a high academic position in Harvard University, which brings true prestige for all our family.

There have been published excellent works about the evolution of the Revista during its first 50 years. It was few of us that had the idea of founding it, but many were the ones that helped us to accomplish this dream. In first place, I want to recall Rector Rodrigo Facio, who with a grand vision of the function of the University, supported the idea immediately and encouraged us to continue with its development. I also want to recall on this day, his collaborators, those that formed the first Scientific Council: the deans of the Faculties of Pharmacy, Lic. Gonzalo González; of Odontology, Dr. Hernán Bolaños; of Sciences (Microbiology), Lic. Gonzalo Morales; and of Agronomy, Ing. Fabio Baudrit. Also I remember with affection many other collaborators whose names would be impossible to mention in this brief message.

Now I wish to look to the future, certain that time will confirm our ambitions. In the name of my family and my own, we want to add today 10.000 dollars to the fund created previously, to reward the best work published in the Revista in the field of Biomedicine. We hope that this contributions may foment more research in this field, the results of which will contribute to increase the prestige of the Revista. Also, we hope that in this way the message written in the Editorial of the first number of the Revista may remain valid:

"The reward of our modest work will be the encouragement that having a serious Revista of wide distribution abroad represents for the scientific endeavour of our university youth, and that isthe manifestation of the growing scientific thought."

With this I take leave, and to celebrate with you the success that the Revista has had, I will use the old expression of my ancestors:

"AD MAJORA!"
