Indice de la microflora marina de Venezuela: diatomeas, dinoflagelados y cocolitofóridos

Abstract

The marine phytoplankton of Venezuela has been studied on a regular basis since the mid 20^th century. However, a species checklist that can be used as a framework for taxonomic studies is lacking. In this paper, an index of the marine microflora of Venezuela is presented for the first time. The index includes only those diatoms (89 centric and 186 pennate species), dinoflagellates (eight naked and 154 thecate species) and coccolithophores (24 especies) for which formal diagnosis and illustrations (drawings and/or photographs) have been reported in the scientific literature (journals and/or first degree or master´s theses). It is ordered alphabetically according to class, order, family, and species. It includes the author (s) of the taxa.

El fitoplancton marino de Venezuela ha sido estudiado con regularidad a partir de la década de 1950. Investigadores como Hustedt (1956), Margalef (1965) y Halim (1967) han realizado valiosos aportes sobre el conocimiento de este grupo en el país. A partir de los años setenta, los investigadores Ferraz-Reyes y Reyes-Vásquez inician sus labores en el Instituto Oceanográfico de Venezuela dando origen a la mayoría de los trabajos sobre el fitoplancton y formando a casi todos fitoplanctonólogos marinos de Venezuela. A pesar de los trabajos taxonómicos realizados por este equipo, hasta el momento no existe un catálogo de los organismos encontrados y la mayoría de los trabajos no han sido publicados. Un esfuerzo inicial ha sido realizado por Spiniello (1996) quien presenta una lista de las diatomeas marino-costeras de Venezuela. Sin embargo, Spiniello (1996) no diferencia entre aquellas especies de diatomeas que han sido identificadas y aquellas de las que existe una diagnosis formal; la autora no incluye los trabajos de Reyes-Vásquez (1971), Velásquez F. (1987), y Argotti Córcega (1993); aparte de que algunas de las localidades citadas son incorrectas.

La inexistencia de una lista de especies para la región no permite corroborar algunas suposiciones, por ejemplo, la de Ferraz-Reyes y Reyes-Vásquez (com. pers.) quienes han señalado un cambio en las especies formadoras de mareas rojas en la zona durante de la década de los setenta a la de los ochenta. Además, los cambios que han ocurrido en la sistemática de las microalgas debido al uso de la microscopía electrónica en las últimas tres década, justifican la necesidad de realizar una investigación bibliográfica para actualizar la nomenclatura. Sumado a esto existe el problema de que la autoría de algunos táxones es incorrecta lo que dificulta los trabajos de revisión y comparación taxonómica. Estos aspectos no solo limitan la labor de investigadores y estudiantes sino que también impiden determinar si se han producido cambios en la composición florística local y/o regional producto de la actividad humana, de proceso naturales o de ambos.

En este trabajo se presenta por primera vez un índice de la microflora marina de Venezuela. El índice sólo incluye diatomeas, dinoflagelados y cocolitofóridos. Esto se debe a: primero, la importancia cualitatitiva y cuantitativa de estos grupos; segundo a la existencia de expertos en la taxonomía de estos grupos; y tercero, a la facilidad para su preservación y estudio.

Materiales y Métodos

Los criterios de clasificación empleados en la elaboración del índice fueron los Round et al. (1990) para las diatomeas; Steindinger y Tangen (1997) para los dinoflagelados y Heimdal (1997) para los cocolitofóridos. Se utilizaron los criterios de Round et al. (1990) para las diatomeas en vez de los de Chrétiennot-Dinet et al. (1993) ó Hasle y Syvertsen (1997) ya que los dos últimos sólo incluyen diatomeas planctónicas. Los nombres específicos de las diatomeas fueron verificados inicialmente utilizando el trabajo de Van Landingham (1967-1979).

Este índice sólo incluye aquellas especies para las cuales se ha realizado una diagnosis formal e ilustraciones (dibujos y/o fotografías). La secuencia es jerárquica y alfabética y se ordena según la clase, orden, familia y especie. Además, en élla se cita al autor(es) de cada taxon. En los casos en los que los organismos hayan sido tranferidos a otro género o hayan cambiado de nombre específico se incluye entre paréntesis el original.

En la elaboración de esta lista se utilizaron los trabajos realizados por: Hustedt (1956; estuario del Lago de Maracaibo, Estado Zulia), Reyes-Vásquez (1971, 1975; Bahía de Mochima, Estado Sucre y Laguna de la Restinga, Estado Nueva Esparta, respectivamente), Breeuwer de Ramírez (1977; Golfo de Santa Fe, Estado Sucre), La Barbera (1977; litoral de la ciudad de Cumaná, Estado Sucre), Varela y Varela (1983; Delta del Río Orinoco, Estado Delta Amacuro), Troncone Osorio (1987; Golfo de Paria, Estados Sucre y Monagas), Velásquez F. (1987; Laguna de Chacopata, Estado Sucre), Subero Pino (1991;); Lagunas de Unare y Píritu, Estado Anzoategui) y Argotti Córcega (1993; Archipiélago Los Roques, Dependencia Federal) para las diatomeas; Halim (1967; plataforma nororiental), La Barbera (1984,1993: plataforma nororiental), Troncone Osorio (1987; Golfo de Paria, Estados Sucre y Monagas), Gamboa-Márquez (1994), Gamboa-Márquez et al.(1994; Archipiélago Los Roques, Dependencia Federal), Estrella de F. (1995; plataforma nororiental), para los dinoflagelados; y Sánchez-Suárez (1990, 1992a,b, 1993, plataforma nororiental) para los cocolitofóridos. En la Fig. 1 se muestra la ubicación de las localidades.

Resumen

Los estudios sobre el fitoplancton marino de Venezuela han sido realizados de manera regular desde mediados del siglo XX. Sin embargo, hasta ahora no se ha realizado un compendio de las especies encontradas que sirva como marco de referencia a los trabajos taxonómicos. En este trabajo se presenta por primera vez un índice de la microflora marina de Venezuela. El índice incluye sólo las diatomeas (89 especies céntricas y 186 especies pennadas), los dinoflagelados (ocho especies atecadas y 154 especies tecadas) y los cocolitóforidos (24 especies) a los cuales se les realizado una diagnosis formal e ilustraciones (dibujos y/o fotografias) y que han sido reportados en la literatura científica (revistas y/o tesis de licenciatura o maestría). Esta ordenado según la clase, orden, familia y especie. Además, en el se cita al autor (es) de cada taxón.ha
