JOHANNING SOLIS, Javier y PENA MENJIVAR, Carlos Alberto. Geopolitics and Environment: Incidence of climate change and geopolitics interests in the Arctic. Relac. Int. [online]. 2020, vol.93, n.1, pp.62-90. ISSN 2215-4582. http://dx.doi.org/10.15359/ri.93-1.4.
The investigation seeks to inquire about the interests that revolve around the Arctic zone. This region has gained greater importance in international relations due to climate change and thaw caused by global warming in the region; awakening economic, political and strategic interests in the main Arctic States. To understand which are the interests of the Arctic States; an analysis of the international regime complex that has been built in the Arctic is carried out; afterwards the main policies and actions conducted by the main States involved in the region are studied. It is concluded that the Arctic-related international regime complex is highly fragmented and weak, which has made it easier for States to pursue their interests in the region more openly, causing tensions between Russia and the rest of the States to increase, and also that even other actors not previously involved insert themselves in the region, such as China, causing misgivings. However, it is found that the current international situation is not conducive to an escalation in the competition for power in the Arctic, at least in the short or medium term, but could increase later as a result of environmental deterioration, product of an ambiguous and contradictory fight for the protection of the environment by the Arctic States.
