SANCHEZ REYES, María Isabel. Journalism under fire: The new war of organized crime in Central America. Anuario de Estudios Centroamericanos [online]. 2017, vol.43, pp.259-285. ISSN 2215-4175.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/aeca.v43i0.31558.

This article is based on the findings of research done on the working conditions that journalists face while reporting on criminal violence in Central America, a region that has gone from decades of civil war to a new form of war waged by organized crime, including drug traffickers, gangs and other groups often operating with impunity and in collusion with civil and military authorities. The research is based on a questionnaire and interviews with journalists in six Central American countries who have suffered aggression while preforming their duty. The study aims to provoke thoughts over the threat that organized crime represents for independent journalism in Central America.
