Abstract

CUELLAR, Luz Angela; REYES, Nini Johana  and  CARRENO, Juan Reynaldo. Strengthening Environmental Life Skills as part of the Natural Sciences among Primary School Children through Ethnobotany Studies in the Classroom. Educación [online]. 2021, vol.45, n.2, pp.413-428. ISSN 2215-2644.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/revedu.v45i1.42704.

A qualitative research approach emphasizing the educational action research method is used to interpret how ethnobotanical knowledge helps nurture environmental life skills, teaching and education in the Natural Sciences among 1st-3rd grade students at two public schools in Colombia. The study participants are students from Las Mercedes Educational Institution - Cazadero branch in the district of Nunchía - Casanare and the Agricultural Technical Educational Institution - Las Minas branch in Boavita-, Boyacá, Colombia. The researchers organized a set of workshops, taking into account the ethnobotanical knowledge of the two participating population groups, to respond to three fundamental components: ethnobotany, linkages with the living environment and biological concepts, and conservation of the ecology. The surrounding environment plays an essential role in teaching as does the importance of family engagement in their children´s education, particularly in this context which involves ancestral knowledge contributions and scientific knowledge outreach.
