Abstract

SANCHEZ AVENDANO, Carlos. The dictionaries of the Costa Rican indigenous languages: from the bilingual alphabetical to the thematic pictorial format. Káñina [online]. 2016, vol.40, suppl.1, pp.213-237. ISSN 2215-2636.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rk.v40i3.29748.

In this paper, we first comment on the main characteristics of the lexicographic works about Costa Rican indigenous languages hitherto published and problematize the accessibility of the traditional bilingual alphabetical format for the members of the communities who speak such languages. Afterward we discuss the specificity of the lexicography of endangered languages, and, finally, we systematize our experience in the creation of thematic pictorial dictionaries1.

Keywords : Costa Rican indigenous languages; lexicography; endangered languages; thematic dictionary; pictorial dictionary.
