Abstract
MADRIGAL, Marta and VARGAS, Ericka. Lexical richness in written production of university students. Káñina [online]. 2016, vol.40, suppl.1, pp.139-147. ISSN 2215-2636. http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rk.v40i3.29260.
In this paper we will analyze the lexical richness in academic writings of undergraduates. The motivation for this analysis comes from the lexical deficiencies in the essays written by students in the Curso Básico de Redacción at the University of Costa Rica. The main objective is to establish the average of lexical richness and compare it with the amount achieved by professional writers. In addition, we will identify content words that are repeated and the possible causes of the lack of lexical variety in the texts. Finally, we will provide some recommendations for students to improve their writing performance in terms of vocabulary.
Keywords : lexical richness; academic writing; vocabulary; lexical variety.
