JIMENEZ, Luis Diego; VALVERDE, Juan Carlos  e  ARIAS, Dagoberto. Determination of the best allometric model for the biomass estimation of Gmelina arborea Roxb. from plantations with sprouts management. Kurú [online]. 2018, vol.15, suppl.1, pp.53-60.  Epub 19-Jul-2019. ISSN 2215-2504.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18845/rfmk.v15i1.3775.

The development of bioenergy projects based on forest plantations with sprout management allows the life of the crop to be extended, gives an added value to plantation, and reduces costs of establishment and management. The present study proposes an estimation of biomass production for the generation and development of allometric equations for decision making in plantations with sprout management of Gmelina arborea in Turrialba, Cartago, Costa Rica. As a case study, a plantation of G. arborea of 2.0 ha with sprout management of a third rotation was taken. The production of biomass area was determined in three years, representing an average of 214.85 Mg/ha with an increase of 71.61 Mg/ha/year. The plantation showed a density stand index (DSI) of 635 that corresponds to the area of self-thinning, with an average diameter of 7.90 cm; under these conditions the plantation presented an average of 4.90 axes per stump or strain and a density of 6,190 axes/ha, which approaches the densities proposed for the management of dendroenergectic plantations in Costa Rica. It was determined that the best allometric equation for the estimation of green biomass was LnBT = -1,7440 + 2,4221 Ln (d) and it can be applied in similar plantations to the one evaluated.
