VALVERDE, Juan Carlos; ARIAS, Dagoberto; CAMPOS, Rooel  e  GUEVARA, Mario. Physical and chemical characterization of the carbon of three segments of stem and branches of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. from dendroenergetic plantations. Kurú [online]. 2018, vol.15, suppl.1, pp.16-24.  Epub 19-Jul-2019. ISSN 2215-2504.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18845/rfmk.v15i1.3774.

Charcoal is the product of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose decomposition and loss of extractables due to the exposure of wood at high temperatures and low oxygen concentration, generating complete combustion. This process can vary according to the species, tree section and even the carbonization technique used. Therefore, this work evaluated the charcoal obtained from three sections of stem (FB, FM and FS) in addition to the branches (RA) of juvenile trees of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.; the study assessed physical properties (weight loss, radial and tangential contraction) and chemical properties (ash, volatile, moisture content and physical carbon) under a process of carbonization that lasted 6 hours and with a maximum temperature of 600 °C. The results showed weight losses of 59 to 65% at 600 °C, with radial contractions of 22 to 28 % and tangential contractions of 5.6 to 7.6 %, with FB showing the highest values of contraction and loss and RA the minors. With the chemical properties, coal presented ash contents of (4.4 to 7.5) %, volatile (20.9 to 32.1) %, fixed coal of (54.6 to 63.5) % and moisture content of (5.0 to 6.1) % at a density of 0.20 to 0.26 g/cm3. These variations implied that cluster analysis provoke FS and RA to show a high closeness, followed by MB and FB which showed the greatest differentiation due to the development degree and structuring presented by the tree in the lower section regarding upper sections.
