Abstract

Seventy melon genotypes grown under greenhouse conditions were evaluated, both in qualitative (4 variables) and quantitative (8 variables) terms. Data show a wide variability between genotypes with respect to mean fruit weight (268,7 - 1279,4 g), number of fruits per plant (0 - 4,75), yield per plant (0 - 2727,7 g), yield per area (0 - 70,85 ton/ha), fruit firmness (0,5 - 4,8 kg/cm2) and percentage of total soluble solids (9,9 - 17,1 °Brix). This information is useful for growers to choose the best variety for their particular market purposes. Most melon genotypes showed high contents of soluble solids (over 12 °Brix) and could be good choices for consumers demanding high quality melons. Andromonoecious melons produced more fruits per plant (2,18) than monoecious (0,67). The number of fruits per plant was higher in Amarillo (3,26), Japanese (2,79), Harper (2,17) and Honey Dew (2,08) melons, compared to Charentais (1,53), Cantaloupe (1,27), Crenshaw (1,25), Galia (1,10) and Italian Cantaloupe (0,25) melons.
