In response to a local concern: why young people do not want to stay on the country side area, from an analytical-descriptive perspective, retention and expulsion factors of young people, members of farming families, in the rural area of Manizales, Colombia, are identified.
From the analysis of testimonies of actors involved in the migration process, four main factors are identified: a) employment opportunities, b) access to productive assets, c) characteristics of family socioeconomic environment, and d) education and professionalization. It is concluded that regardless of the election, who decides to stay or leave should do in possession of a number of tools that will allow a dignified life project either in the country site or the city.
