The academic homework is a valuable teaching tool in favor of an effective, structured, and meaningful teaching and learning process. This article proposes a guide to assign smart homework through activities that promote social competence, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving which objective is to assure an effective, collaborative, and formative teaching and learning process. Some of the assignments highlighted to these purposes are the six thinking hats, SCAMPER technique, CPS, alternative scenarios, VIOBAC moments, among other useful and versatile ideas that will lead students to meaningful academic interactions. These assignments have shown a very positive outcome in the classroom, maximizing students` motivation to learn, stimulating a higher level of participation and student involvement in their communities as agents of social change.
