The present study aims to determine the correlation between the characteristics of SMEs and whether or not is should increase the interest of research, since in the middle Rica found no studies directly related to the retention time of these organizations. To attain the goals of this study a simple of 240 micros were included and a survey applied to gather relevant and pertinent data such as legal establishment of SMEs, sex, age and education of those who direct, form of marketing, sales conditions and payment methods they use. The information was collected in late 2011 and early 2012, and the sample was made up of the main micro cantons of Guanacaste. The research aroused a few questions such as what features make SMEs stay on marker began to wonder: What features make SMEs can be kept on the market? To answer that question raises two hypotheses, the first of which seeks to establish the possible relationship between the SME business and that kind of that business. The second is that which seeks to identify the characteristics that allow SMEs to stay long in the market or fail. Among the main conclusions drawn from the implementation of the survey include: • The main business activities are conducted in Guanacaste are the commercial and services; • 61 % of SMEs have more than five years in the market; • Legal figures most representative of which is the physical company; • Equal representation in the men and women who run or own SMEs are aged between 27 and 51 years; • The education level was mostly school or incompletes secondary education in a 60% of respondents. To market their products and services SMEs use direct sales as payment and credit system mostly.
