Abstract

LI CHAN, Elisa. Gourmet culinary lexicographical linguistic syncretism in the dialect “puntanerense”. InterSedes [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.28, pp.234-252. ISSN 2215-2458.

The purpose of this study is to show the influence of the Cantonese Chinese dialect and culture in the dialect used by a group of citizens from the center city. The business contact of a group of Chinese immigrants from the South part of China with people from Puntarenas has influenced the dialect spoken in this Pacific seaport. There are some Cantonese Chinese words and phrases that carry the adjective Chinese that enriches the vocabulary and show how gastronomic and culinary elements influence the vocabulary of the dialect spoken by this community. This is a qualitative study. The data comes from interviews and questionnaires given to a group of students and people who live in this place. Analysis of the data shows linguistic words that participants used in their dialect, a colloquial and different language from its social group because of the direct influence of the Chinese immigrants established in Puntarenas.
