This paper analyzes the role of Freemasonry as an agent of change in the history of Costa Rica. The manuscript is divided into five parts: attempts to organize lodges in Central America before their establishment in 1865, supported by primary sources; the relationship Freemasonry and modernity; anti-masonry; the relationship between Freemasonry and esotericism; and the bibliography on Freemasonry in Costa Rica.
