CHANTA MARTINEZ, René Antonio. Anti-communists, Anti-liberal and Anti-masonic ideas in the Estudios Centroamericanos magazine (ECA) (Central American Studies). El Salvador, 1946-1965. REHMLAC [online]. 2023, vol.15, n.1, pp.26-43. ISSN 1659-4223.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rehmlac.v15i1.52637.

In this article, an introduction to the study of the anti-liberal and anti-Masonic ideas that appeared in the Estudios Centroamericanos magazine (ECA) (Central American Studies) in El Salvador from 1946 to 1964 will be made. This publication was edited by priests of the Society of Jesus of the province of Central America. An exploration of the different editions of this magazine from its foundation (1946) until the year 1965 when the Second Vatican Council concluded will be presented here. The magazine’s anti-Masonic and anti-liberal thought was in tune with the condemnations of Freemasonry coming from the hierarchical sectors of the Catholic Church. This article also highlights the fact that once the Second Vatican Council concluded, the criticism to Freemasonry would disappear from the ECA magazine. This was due to a series of changes and reforms that the Council promoted and also to the social emphasis that appear in documents of the Latin American episcopate such as the one in Medellin.
