CRUZ-OROZCO, José-Ignacio. Spanish Freemasonry in exile: Relations with mexican institutions (1939-1953). REHMLAC [online]. 2021, vol.13, n.2, pp.104-124. ISSN 1659-4223. http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rehmlac.v13i2.46460.
Spanish Freemasonry went into harsh exile when the Spanish Civil War ended. Over 1,000 Freemasons fled from Spain and a large group was able to rebuild its basic structures in Mexico. According to documents, the relationships between Mexican and Spanish powers were presided by agreements and solidarity. The Mexicans granted the Spanish the right to asylum and they supported their claims against the Franco regime. Accordingly, the Spaniards repeatedly expressed their gratitude to the Mexicans, especially the Valle de México Grand Lodge.
