VARGAS VARGAS, José Ángel. The Representation of Indigenous Woman in La luna de la hierba roja (José León Sánchez). Comunicación [online]. 2023, vol.32, n.1, pp.22-32. ISSN 1659-3820.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18845/rc.v32i44.6788.

This article analyzes the novel La luna de la hierba roja (1984) by Costa Rican writer José León Sánchez. The main objective is to identify how indigenous women are represented in this novel and its contribution to Costa Rican literature. First, a contextualization of the topic is made; for this purpose, works and authors of the twentieth century are referred to, which, on the one hand, provide an idealized vision of the indigenous world and, on the other hand, from a critical position, in a specific historical reality. Second, the intention of the author becomes explicit by fictionalizing the story and taking the woman as an example of the struggle and rupture of a colonial system that subjugated the indigenous communities that continues to this day, under codes of authoritarianism and corruption associated with the entry of contaminated corn to Orillarrica. The analysis shows that symbol and metaphor are the two main rhetorical strategies used in the novel to represent the indigenous woman in the leading role of Aire who, besides recovering the ancestral, the historical memory, and the autochthonous, becomes the warrior who embodies the values and wisdom of the indigenous world.
