Costa Rican parents awareness of the purpose of mathematics in daily life
In 2018, the School of Mathematics of the Costa Rica Institute of Technology developed the extension project titled FAM: Family and Attitude toward Mathematics, aimed at “fostering in parents of students of participating schools a favorable attitude toward mathematics, its usefulness and importance, and a positive view of their children’s ability to learn mathematics and to enjoy the process.” FAM project’s operational strategy consisted of four workshops, developed in each of six participating schools. The second workshop focused on demonstrating and exemplifying the usefulness of mathematics in everyday life. This study presents details of the workshop and its results.
