SFL, DE and ICT: Exploring potentialities at UFPB virtual

Even though the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in foreign language teachingis a recurrent topic in several studies and recent professional seminars, it is a complex processthat implies a given set of variables, such as the tools used (and their availability), the teacher, and thestudents (with their given skill set and attitudes), as well as how the content itself is presented. Thisarticle presents the results of the research carried out at Paraiba Federal University-UFPB/Brazil withteachers of the Spanish Bachelor of Arts program, both in the on-site and online modalities. The participantswere given questionnaires to determine what they believed ICT is and how they came to playin the Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) learning process, with the main purpose of determiningwhich 3.0 tools were most commonly used, as well as the most common difficulties in a technological environment.

The results show that, even though ICT are part of their working environment, especially in virtualteaching, the teacher’s training is deficient in that particular area, without taking into consideration theimmediate potential (and the need) for digital competency in the new teaching andlearning concept, especially in SFL courses. Thus, the technological innovation miracle” has not yetmaterialized in many of the classes studied suggesting thatinitial/further training should be reconsidered,as well as awareness of the wide range possibilities at hand for teachers instructing futureeducators.
