Cultural appropriation of drug trafficking elements in Chile in the narco series Prófugos

Even though to this day Chile is one of the countries in Latin America with the lowest crime rate directly related to drug trafficking, it is not completely immune to the influence of narco-culture originating in Colombia and Mexico. Chile hasculturally appropriated (Subercaseaux, 1988) some features of the drug traffickingculture and produced its own fiction. This essay analyzes the narco-seriesPrófugos(2012) as an example of cultural appropriation. Aside from resorting tocertain narco-culture elements, such as the gore aesthetic, the temporality circle, and the delegitimization of the state (Santos, Vásquez and Urgelles, 2016), it also adds national symbols that represent recent events in Chilean history, such as the Pinochet dictatorship, student opposition, and the Mapuche conflict. It concludes that Chile has taken into consideration a foreign format-that of narco-culture-inorder to narrate and analyze the socio-historical context of Chile nowadays.
