Resumen

GIALLORENZI, María Laura. Feminist critique about the idea of the good mother. Reflexiones [online]. 2017, vol.96, n.1, pp.87-95. ISSN 1659-2859.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rr.v96i1.30634.

The present article is part of the research of Master’s Thesis in Cultural Studies and has the purpose of socializing a brief look about the feminist critique of the family institution and the idea of the good mother in the patriarchal system. A theoretical review that brings to light some of the debates that took place within the feminist theorist from the late eighteenth century on the topic of maternity. Thus, different authors and authoresses pose problems about the constructions and effects of the various social discourses on women, among which are the discourses on maternity. Feminists interpretations mentioned in this paper, have defined the idea of maternity as a discursive construction supported by different disciplines -at the beginning theological and medical knowledge, and then demography, psychology, among others- and in disciplinary institutions that have been modified throughout history, establishing for each historical period what is considered a good or a bad mother, according to what is estimated negative or positive in each age. In this sense, the main feminist theoretical critiques which draw the attention to historical and philosophical aspects that contributed to configure the hegemonic way of producing maternity are recognized and the social and political discourses that helped to the contemporary consolidation of the familiar institution are revised.
