The ageing process in Latin American countries has configured a demand for research, which comes with new theoretical and methodological challenges, among them, the possibility of monitoring this population with the Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA). Within this framework, we explore possibilities to advance the study of the elderly based on the information available in two countries in Latin America: Argentina and Uruguay. Therefore, this research proposes to explore the availability of data sources taking as a reference the indicators proposed by CELADE (2006), with a view from the HRBA. Our results show it is possible to create the proposed indicators system, but with limitations related to the HRBA. We also show the need for generating new sources of information which enable picking up specific information, aimed at tracking the human rights of the elderly, in all their environments (improving, particularly, the data collection on health and on favorable environments)
