This article presents results obtained from a bibliographical review about the development of the university extension. It is determined the theoretical and methodological references of the university extension in high education and its contributions in the initial formation of pedagogical careers in Cuba. They were consider the criteria of the following authors Del Huerto, González, González- Fernández Larrea, Santos, Tünnermann; using these authors the researchers assumed positions that correspond to the current approaches of Pedagogy. It was carried out a documentary analysis based on articles about research results in scientific databases and institutional documents. In addition, there were applied methods of theoretical level such as the historical-logic, used to deepen in the evolution, tendencies and generalizations of the development of the University Extension in the initial formation in Cuba. The main results obtained in the study showed the conceptual evolution of this process from the creation of universities to the present day, which allows us to reformulate and refine it in order to improve the quality of our future professionals. There are identified, some concepts and models as well as specific experiences in the development of the extension function.
