Abstract

OROPEZA TENA, Roberto; AVALOS LATORRE, María Luisa  and  FERREYRA MURILLO, Diego Agustín. Comparison between academic performance, auto-efficacy and sports practice in university students. Rev. Actual. Investig. Educ [online]. 2017, vol.17, n.1, pp.278-299. ISSN 1409-4703.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/aie.v17i1.27271.

The present work shows the obtained results by a quantitative, transverse and analytical research that had the aim of analyzing the relation between university students (men and women) with and without sports practice in academic performance (average of qualifications and qualifications in subjects) and self-efficacy. In spite of the fact that the academic performance and the self-efficacy are considered some of the most important dimensions in the educational area, there are scanty research that compare the differences between the one who practice or does not practice any sport. They took part 331 students (72 men and 259 women) of the Psychology Faculty of a public university of Mexico. A card of identification obtained the social-demographic information. It was designed and applied an Inventory of Academic Activities and Extra Academic and the Inventory of General Self-efficacy; and there was obtained the school notes of every participant. There was a statistical significant difference between the academic performance (T = 1.801, p<.005) and self-efficacy (T =-3.063, p <0.003) comparing the participants who practice sports activities and who do not practice them; as well as in the average of notes of some subjects in those who were practicing systematically some sport. There are no statistical significant differences between men and women related to the time they practice a physical activity, it is necessary to apply further research related to this aspect. From the findings, it is considered that the practice of some physical activity influences positively on the students, since it promotes the discipline, healthy way of life and helps to have a good academic performance. It is advisable to extend this type of investigations to students from other disciplines as well as to other educational levels. Also to adjust the quantity of men and women since the findings can owe to the sample was predominantly feminine or to the career that they were studying.
