Abstract

CORRALES HUENUL, Angélica; SOTO HERNANDEZ, Valentina  and  VILLAFANE HORMAZABAL, Gabriela. Learning barriers for students with disabilities in a chilean university. Student demands - institutional challenges. Rev. Actual. Investig. Educ [online]. 2016, vol.16, n.3, pp.67-96. ISSN 1409-4703.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/aie.v16i3.25957.

This paper presents the results of a research on students with disabilities in a Chilean university. The aim of the study is to determine the learning and participation barriers faced by these students and, thus, determine the educational assistance necessary for them to pursue their studies properly. In terms of methodology, the study was defined as descriptive and cross-sectional, and the main technique for data collection was a questionnaire. The results indicate that learning barriers are developed around three categories: infrastructure, teaching-learning process and institutional management. Students have different demands, according to their disability. Therefore, this factor becomes a key aspect to consider the educational assistance requested. From the results, the challenges are analyzed and strategies are proposed in order to improve accessibility policies for university.

Keywords : learning; student participation; disability; accessibility; institutional management; Chile.
