Abstract

The following scientific article includes the most relevant scope of a qualitative and non-interactive category educational research, which was developed at the State Distance University of Costa Rica (UNED) in late 2011 with the purpose of evaluating the incorporation of the transversality approach in its curriculum design. This study was delimited to the analysis of the operationalization of the institutional axis of cultural diversity and multiculturalism in the curriculum materials for the subjects of Geography of Costa Rica and Touristic Geography of Costa Rica, both theoretical and practical nature and regular mode. The technique of documentary research supplemented by interviews in depth was applied, prioritizing the evaluation criteria of the presence and relevance of the mentioned axis. The investigation identified significant efforts by the academic institutions of the UNED to incorporate the cultural diversity shaft within institutional rules, course designs and other materials, but only from the level of the implicit and from traditional approaches. Hence arise improvement strategies, both epistemological and methodological, in order to enhance these processes.
