This article examines the relation between state-building and military expenditures in Costa Rica during the first five decades of the nineteenth century. During that period there was an important increase of military forces, and consequently, an increase of resources given to the Armed Forces by the authorities. Creating the means to obtain, manage and spend those economic resources helped the consolidation of the modern state in Costa Rica.
