This paper presents the defined occupational categories in the first republican census ordered in province of Cartagena. An approach to demographic devoting major attention to shaping the socio-productive structure is attempted. For analysis Cartagena province was divided into two spaces: one urban and one rural court. The first corresponds to the canton of Cartagena located in the northern part of the province and the second to canton Chinú located south. It is noted as the north was a provincial urban characteristics that led to focus their activities productive activities in local, regional and international, with a strong concentration of the state bureaucracy and craft production; while in the south there was an agricultural expansion and population growth accompanied by a variety of agricultural production activities.
