This article seeks to understand how in different urban and social settlements, of the city of San José, cataloged under the concept of “barrios del Sur”, were carried out processes of social control and stigmatization during the period spanning 1950 to 1980. The speech of the period, relating to problematic aspects pertaining to social control and stigmatization is analyzed. This in order to understand why the neighborhoods were associated with marginality and social unrest. To achieve this, two cases of studies of urban settlement emerged in this period are analyzed.
