This paper attempts to address in detail the intense recorded debate, both internally and externally, in relation to the international slave trade during the period of Independence and the first years of republican life in Colombia. The road to the abolition of this trade was not easy. It happened a play of forces between conservative and progressive tendencies, which made ??this process was marked by a combination of advances and retreats. Particularly, economic sectors that depended on slave labor openly expressed opposition to attempts to implement restrictions in this business. Continuous changes of government, due to intense political and military struggle for power, prevented the development of a coherent long-term policy of abolition of slave trade but republican governments gave further impetus to this humanitarian purpose. Finally, it should be recognized that these debates around trafficking in some way contributed to encourage proposals that targeted abolish the slave system.
