The Chilean victory obtained at the War of the Pacific is not only an object of study from a military point of view, with emphasis on the strategies and battles as meta stories worthy of belonging to the History of a nation; but it also is a discourse that allows the unification of a national community around it. In addition, however, it is important to listen to the participants’ testimonies and to recover their voices to know what they are telling us. The hypothesis in this article deals with how the official discourse about the Chilean Historiography and the memory of the same war have neglected fundamental historicity elements to understand the life experiences of these men, whose testimonies have remained so that we can decipher their subjectivities about their lives in campaign. The following article is a compilation of testimonies about the War of the Pacific by Chilean soldiers, who tell us their subjectivities and clarify what they felt, allowing us to separate the “man from the myth” and see them as the men they really were, historical subjects that for different reasons found themselves involved in a war in which they suffered, fought and which they memories survive to be studied.
