Abstract

BARRANTES-MORALES, Faride  and  SALAS-SEGURA, Donato A.. Survival and mental and physical condition of patients with isquemic heart disease discharged from a third level intensive care unit. Rev. costarric. cardiol [online]. 2016, vol.18, n.1-2, pp.13-16. ISSN 1409-4142.

Justification:

Survival and quality of life of patients who are discharged of intensive care units has become a common concern about the high incidence of cognitive and functional consequences suffered by this population. This paper presents data on survival and quality of life of patients with ischemic heart disease discharged from the Intensive Care Unit and followed after discharge at 28 days and 6 months. This study is a branch of a larger investigation that tracked all patients discharged from the unit.

Method:

An observational, descriptive and prospective study of a yearlong study was made and followed patients discharged from the ICU to 28 days and 6 months later. The information gathered included demographic and health status data, that information was collected on admission to the ICU, at hospital discharge, 28 days and six month later. Besides the quality of life from their independence and reintegration or return to normal activities was evaluated.

Results:

A total of 41 patients were enrolled, with an average age of 64 years, 63% were men. The most common diagnosis was stable angina in 26 patients, followed by ST elevation myocardial infarction with 12 patients. Mortality was 3 patients, none of them in the ICU. Average stay was of 2.5 days. Effective reintegration was 68% at 28 days and 63% at six months.

Conclusion:

This is a population with very low mortality and good rate of reintegration to normal activities.
