Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to understand the meaning of the concepts care and nursing care concept and analyze gender aspects related to these concepts. Methodology: This qualitative study used a hermeneutic approach, the sample was comprised by18 people who worked at the University of Concepción, Chile;  of those 12 were working at the cleaning and maintenance area and 6 were linguistic professors, who were chosen using a convenience and saturation criteria. A data was collected using a semi -structured interview which was created based on the study purposes. Data were organized using Atlas ti 6.0 and a content analysis was performed. Results: Participants indicated that care is defined as prevention strategies against possible risks and it is directed toward one and others. Nursing care is related closely to the nursing actions done when individuals are experiencing pathological states. Regarding gender terms, although participants claim that delivery of care by women and men is the same, there are stereotypes relationship linked to each gender. Nursing care is delivered equally by men and women, but there are still unique conditions linked to the gender of person delivering nursing care. Conclusions: It is concluded that care must go beyond the intervention in disease states, which must include prevention as a key strategy.
