Abstract

CASTRO CORONADO, Ana Laura  and  RAMIREZ BRENES, Ana Lucía. Prevalence of Binge Eating Disorder signs in overweight and obese adults, Costa Rica. Rev. costarric. salud pública [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.1, pp.20-26. ISSN 1409-1429.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of Binge Eating Disorder (BED) signs in overweight and obese adults. Method: Cross-sectional study conducted in 158 patients, ages 23 to 64 years who attended the Group Therapy for Patients with Chronic Diseases: Hypertension and Diabetes in the Área de Salud de Coronado during April-May 2012. Socio-demographic and anthropometric data were collected. The presence of BED and the prevalence of the Patterns of Episodic Overeating (Episodic Overeating, Binge Eating, Binge Eating Syndrome, Binge Eating Syndrome and Distress, and Binge Eating Disorder) were determined using the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns-Revised (QEWP-R) The descriptive and statistical analyses of the information included the calculation of measures of central tendency and tests of independence between variables. Result: The overall prevalence of Binge Eating Disorder signs in the adult sample was 33,5%. Episodic overeating was found in 48,2% of the patients and 19,2% reported all the signs associated with this eating disorder. No association emerged between the presence of signs and sex, age or body mass index. The presence of signs was significantly related to a higher level of distress and concern about shape and figure. Discussion: This study provides results that are very similar to the ones of prevalence studies conducted in Latin America. It also proves the necessity of an earlier detection and better treatment by a multidisciplinary team, in order to restore normal eating patterns.
