The human papillomavirus (HPV) is now considered the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world. Often, these infections are asymptomatic, remaining unnoticed unless molecular methods are used. Other infections become chronic, with the greatest oncogenic potential. Development: The virus was detected in oral squamous cell carcinoma and benign lesions of oral mucosa, where high and low HPV oncogenic risk was found. In normal oral mucosa three different types of high oncogenic risk HPV were identified. Studies indicate that the finding of in healthy mucosa depends on the method of study employed. However, despite the importance of early diagnosis, there is little information on the prevalence in healthy oral mucosa. HPV infection can be diagnosed by different methods, but not all methods allow detection of the genome or allow determination of the viral type involved. Discussion: HPV typing can find viral types circulating in a population, facilitating the development and implementation of programs for prevention, diagnosis and treatment, so the identification of high cancer risk HPV should be performed routinely.Althoughthe bestdiagnosticmethods aremolecular testing, the geographical prevalence of different types of HPV should be considered in the choice of specific method in order to avoid inaccurate conclusions.
