Resumen

Objective: The degree of aluminum contamination in blood serum of patients undergoing dialysis was determined and this contamination was associated with the aluminum content in dialysis fluids used by these patients and the alterations showed in their health. Methods: Blood serum samples from 34 patients were analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Serum samples were diluted 1:4 with the modifier (magnesium nitrate and Triton X-100, 1 %), and dialysates were acidified to 1,3 %. Results: The aluminum content in blood serum of four healthy individuals was 11 ± 9 m g L-1; serum samples were analyzed from 34 dialysis patients of two hospitals in the city of Cali-Colombia; patients from the Hospital Universitario del Valle (which used deionized water to prepare the dialysate), showed lower serum aluminum concentrations (60 ± 20 mg L-1) than those from the Instituto de Seguros Sociales (511 ± 96 mg L-1), where this water was not treated. ISS patients had a higher incidence of aluminum-related diseases than those from the Hospital. Accuracy was between 99-101 % and detection limits were 1,5 and 1,2 m g L-1 for serum and dialysates, respectively. Conclusion: There was a direct relationship between aluminum concentration in blood and dialysates and the incidence of aluminum-related diseases.
