Abstract

SEQUEIRA SOTO, Jorge  and  ROMERO ZUNIGA, Juan José. Proposal for an Integrated Information System for Epidemiological Leptospirosis. Rev. costarric. salud pública [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.1, pp.37-45. ISSN 1409-1429.

Objectives: To describe, analyze and propose improvements in the design and data flow for the epidemiological surveillance system for leptospirosis in Costa Rica. Methods: The information flows of the present system established by the current protocol are described. The data flow diagrams were drafted according to the current Information system; besides, we present a proposal of integrated information flow using the unified modeling language. Results: The current system has information duplicity among the different actors and processes causing low agreement in the provided information. The system doesn’t have processes destined to improve and control the collection of second samples. The epidemiological surveillance information is not used by actors at higher levels of the health areas, which reduces the usefulness of this information. Conclusions: The present design and the different findings from our study, show of the reconstructing and redesigning the Epidemiological Surveillance system. A system design is proposed consisting of an system integrated through the interrelation of different actors within the network who share the information that they generate, allowing the establishment of processes for the automatic data acquisition, handling, storage and epidemiological data analysis.
