This characterization was based on determinants of health of children who died from malnutrition in different areas of Costa Rica over the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. Objective: To determine the characteristic of children who were reported dead from malnutrition during 2005-2007, through the identification of the micro and the macro environment in where they lived, to create a risk profile that would make possible a timely intervention in children with similar and current family circumstances in Costa Rica. Materials and methods: Retrospective data was collected in which was included quantitative and ethnographical data of the 10 children that died from malnutrition over the years of 2005, 2006 and 2007, in different areas of Costa Rica. Results and Discussion: The dominant variables that were found in the micro and macro environment of the children that died from malnutrition were: masculine sex, age of 2 years old, underweight, diarrhea, vomiting, infections, low level of maternal education, overcrowding, low socioeconomic status, contamination, lack of access to health and food. Conclusion: Certainly a conclusion is reached and this is that the death of infants from malnutrition over the period 2005-2007 has factors in common. These factors played an important role in their death and they can be used as a risk profile which is a tool for health personnel and authorities to identify those children who are at greater risk of dying from malnutrition and classify them as a priority within the group of preschoolers.
