Abstract

GONZALEZ, Rafael; MARANDA, Louise  and  ROMERO, Juan José. Efecto de la vacunación anti-leptospira en bovinos lecheros sobre la producción de anticuerpos anti-leptospira en trabajadores de lecherías de cuatro zonas de Costa Rica. Rev. costarric. salud pública [online]. 2007, vol.16, n.30, pp.39-45. ISSN 1409-1429.

Objective: This experimental study assessed the indirect effect of the anti-Leptospira vaccine Leptoferm-5® (Pfizer®) regarding the production of anti-Leptospira antibodies in dairymen from four dairy areas in Costa Rica. Materials and Methods: 171 dairymen took part in the study; 94 in the treatment group and 77 in the control group. Three blood samples were taken from each worker three times throughout a year period: before the vaccination of the animals, and six and twelve months after the initial vaccination. The microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was used to detect anti-Leptospira interrogans antibodies, specifically towards pomona, hardjo, canicola and grippotyphosa serovars. All samples were assayed in the laboratory of Instituto Costarricense de Investigación y Educación en Nutrición y Salud (INCIENSA: Costa Rican Institute of Investigation and Education in Nutrition and Health). The prevalence ratio and the relative risk were used to determine whether or not the anti-Leptospira vaccination in cattle has association with the seropositivity of dairymen. Results: The global amount of seropositive samples to any Leptospira interrogans serovars in the three samplings was 10.27% (50/487). Changes in seropositivity for both treated and control groups of the three samplings were observed; thus, there was an increase between the first and second sampling (p< 0.05), and a decrease between the second and third samplings in both groups (p < 0.05); whereas, between the first and third sampling there was no difference. Finally, the vaccination of the cattle and the percentage of seropositive dairymen to Leptospira interrogans did not show association. Conclusion: The vaccination of cattle with anti-Leptospira did not have an effect on the anti-Leptospira antibody titers of the dairymen for the serovars analyzed in this study.
