In 1996, the Costa Rican Social Security developped a Program of Medical Education to promote an intesive knowledge of antibiotics rational use in several health center. In order to evaluate the posible impact of educative intervention in antibiotics prescriptions, ten health centers of all visited reported consuption of cephalexin, amoxicilin and sulpha-metoxazol (S-TMP) in both formulation avalable (pills and suspension) during three month after and three moths before our visit (it was included datas from two centers as control group). Results were recalculated to standarized index as Defined Daily Doses (DDD) and analized by comparing between periods and center. Before the intervention the acumulative DDD was 46.58, increasing + 1.76 the following three months in all centers. Prescription of cephalexin decreased 12% and S-TMP decreased 14%, both decreases registrated in the 70% of the centers visited. On the other hand, prescriptions of amoxicilin increased in all of the centers, and reached 32%. The control group showed a sistematic increased of drugs consuption +12% of cephalexin and S-TMP, +37% for amoxicilin. These study showed that drugs prescriptions can be modified, specially in close places (ambulatory settings). Then, educative interventions has positive impact in prescriptions of antibiotics, and because of that, prescriptions of cephalexin and S-TMP were less, mean while, the increase of amoxicilin consuption was less. Also, the medical education is usefull to promote continouslly the rational drug use.
