Whooping cough is a respiratory infection caused by Bordetella Pertussis, characterized by a persistent and suffocating cough which lasts several weeks. Although the disease is preventable, it continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in newborns and infants in whom the clinical course is more serious, and therefore remains a concern for health care officials. This article will review the topic examining etiology, clinical course, diagnostics, treatment, and prevention, making reference to the situation in Costa Rica
