Sleep plays a vital role in our lives, producing a variety of systemic perturbations if it is inadequate. Shiftwork and nightwork involve an increase of changes at biological, familiar and social levels. Sleep is regulated by a series of interactions in both biochemical and endocrinological levels, which are altered in this type of works. Below, there is a review of the sleep physiology and the possible conditions that may experience shift workers or night workers due to the deprivation or poor quality of sleep.
