The clinical files of 85 patients of Hospital Nacional Psiquiátrico Manuel Antonio Chapuí (in Costa Rica) with at least one hospitalization between January 1st and December 31st, 2013 with the primary discharge diagnosis of borderline personality disorder were analyzed. Of the 85 cases studied, 23 had one or more hospital readmissions (27%). The group with readmissions had a significantly larger percentage of patients with psychiatric comorbidities. There were some statistically significant differences between the group without readmissions and the group with repeated hospitalizations. In the group with readmissions, there was a greater frequency of attachment problems with the parents and more antecedents of hospitalizations in the mother. Some key areas for intervention were identified, like the promotion of substance abstinence and work rehabilitation.
