Colloid cysts are intracranial lesions with an estimated incidence of three individuals per million people per year. They are benign tumors of the anterior portion of the third ventricle. The normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid may be interrupted by a large cyst obstructing the foramen of Monro. The signs and symptoms associated cover a wide range of features, from a non-specific headaches to intracranial hypertension data, some colloid cysts occur in the acute onset of hydrocephalus and can lead to sudden death. Case: We present the case of an adolescent male 13 years of age, black race, who two days before his death had expressed headache. On examination autopsy showed a third ventricular colloid cyst that caused acute obstructive hydrocephalus with severe cerebral edema and herniation of cerebellar tonsils. In this article we discuss the main features of the colloid cyst and performed a brief literature review
