The importance of antigenemia assay for the diagnostic of active infection of cytomegalovirus (CMV) is discussed. A review of the main aspects related to virus transmission and the advantages and drawbacks of most common diagnostic test used for CMV, is also presented. The improvements that represent the antigenemia test acording to specificity, sensibility plus time and correlation to clinical patient features is analyzed, as well as the usefulness of this antiviral therapy follow-up.
