Abstract

HERNANDEZ-GOMEZ, Gabriela; MORALES-MARTINEZ, Gabriela  and  RODRIGUEZ-ZAMORA, María G.. Evaluation of work safety performance in World Bank construction projects: case TEC Costa Rica. Tecnología en Marcha [online]. 2021, vol.34, n.2, pp.23-36. ISSN 0379-3982.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18845/tm.v34i2.4845.

The construction sector has historically registered in the world the highest rate of accidents, disabling injuries and deaths. The objectives of this study were: (i) to evaluate the performance of the contractors of six complete building constructions at the Technological Institute of Costa Rica, financed by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and supervised by the client, through the Environmental and Social Safeguard; (ii) propose a performance evaluation methodology in occupational safety. It was analyzed if: (i) the total number of accidents decreased as the number of occupational safety procedures increased; (ii) there was an association between the number of procedures and the training provided; (iii) the accident incidence rate decreased as the number of trainings increased; (iv) compliance in aspects of occupational safety was affected by the construction area, number of procedures, accident rate and years of experience of the professional in charge. The findings confirm the client’s role in the management of occupational safety and its positive impact on the performance of contractors. In parallel, a methodological proposal is presented for performance evaluation, applicable to construction projects of this nature.
